Acer W4 with Windows Phone Mango Goes Official as Allegro

Acer has just gone official with its first Windows Phone Mango smartphone, the W4. No surprise here, as the device was showcased last month at IFA 2011.

We spent some time with the Acer W4 during our visit in Berlin for this year's IFA trade fair and we were quite impressed by the phone's stylish look.

We've been told by the folks from Acer that the device will be officially announced sometime in October, but most likely it will be labeled with a different name.

Well, that just happened, as Acer has officially introduced its Windows Phone Mango device as Acer Allegro.

No surprise here either, as the Allegro was launched in India almost two weeks ago, along with the HTC Radar and Samsung Omnia W.

According to the guys over at WPCentral, Acer Allegro will be available in France in black and white, exactly the colors we spotted at IFA 2011, for 300 EUR (425 USD). However, the smartphone won't hit shelves until mid-November.

Acer Allegro is a second-tier Windows Phone device, so it doesn't come with anything spectacular in terms of hardware.

The phone is equipped with a standard 1 GHz single core Qualcomm MSM8255 processor and offers an unusually low storage, only 8GB of internal memory.

Unfortunately, users cannot expand the amount of storage because the phone lacks a microSD card slot.

Acer Allegro measures 11.6 x 5.9 x 13mm and weighs 126g (battery included). The phone looks rather stylish, even though it's just a mid-budget handset.

It comes with a 3.6-inch WVGA capacitive touchscreen display with 16 million colors support and 480 x 800 pixels resolution.

Furthermore, the Allegro also sports a 5-megapixel camera with LED flash, as well as a range of sensors, including accelerometer, proximity sensor and light sensor.

The phone is powered by an 1300 mAh Li-Ion battery and offers standard connectivity features such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and A-GPS.

Sony Ericsson Xperia neo V Available in the UK, £249.99 SIM free

Japanese-Swedish mobile phone maker Sony Ericsson has just made available for purchase in the UK a new smartphone running under the Android platform, namely the Xperia neo V.

On the company's website, the new device can be seen listed with a price tag of £249.99 SIM free (around $400 / 285 Euros).

This is one of the latest smartphones that Sony Ericsson made official with Google's Android operating system on board.

It features a 3.7-inch 16,777,216 colour TFT / 854x480 pixels touchscreen display that hides a 1GHz application processor beneath it, along with 512MB of RAM.

Moreover, the handset offers 320MB of internal memory, expandable via a microSD memory card slot to up to 32GB.

On the back, the new device features a photo snapper that can shoot videos in HD resolution, complemented by a front facer for making video calls.

“Share emotions with your Xperia neo V HD mobile. Shoot videos in HD and view them on the Reality Display with Mobile BRAVIA Engine, or see it all come alive on your HD TV in 3D. Need to see what your pals are up to? Go for a video chat,” Sony Ericsson notes.

The new device also comes to the market with WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity capabilities, as well as with GPS receiver and support for Google Maps.

Moreover, it offers a wide range of services available from Google themselves, as well as access to the Android Market for downloading and installing more applications and games.

Not to mention that it comes with Facebook inside Xperia from Sony Ericsson for a great social networking experience, as well as with other applications and services from the mobile phone maker.

“10 million songs. Thousands of movies. From the major music labels and film studios. Enjoy it all on your Xperia neo V via the Sony Entertainment Network services Video Unlimited and Music Unlimited,” Sony Ericsson explains.

Cheap T-Mobile Rapport Android Phone Available in the UK

Both Vodafone and Orange carriers have launched their own branded Android smartphones manufactured by Chinese handset makers such as ZTE and Huawei.

Monte Carlo / ZTE Skate, San Francisco / ZTE Blade and Stockholm / Huawei Ideos X1 are just a few models introduced by Orange and Vodafone this year.

Recently, T-Mobile UK decided to go live with a similar budget-friendly smartphone, the T-Mobile Rapport, which seems to be the same device launched by Orange a while ago as Stockholm.

The smartphone is now available at T-Mobile UK for £69.99 ($112 or 80 EUR) on PAYG (pay as you go) with a required £10 ($16 or 11EUR) top-up.

However, customers who prefer to grab the smartphone for free will have to subscribe to a two-year monthly plan starting at £10.21 ($16 or 11.6 EUR), which will net them 100 minutes, unlimited texts, and 500MB of data.

The Rapport comes with a 2.8-inch capacitive touchscreen with 262k colors support and 320 x 240 pixels resolution, that goes along with accelerometer sensor for UI auto-rotate and proximity sensor for auto turn-off.

Although the T-Mobile Rapport is an affordable handset, it offers users almost the same level of functionality as any other Android device.

Aimed at customers who never owned an Android smartphone before, T-Mobile Rapport lacks the power to impress tech-savvy users.

The phone sports a 3-megapixel camera with autfocus and camcorder, as well as microSD card slot for memory expansion (up to 32GB).

As T-Mobile UK explains, “with Android 2.2 (Froyo), the T-Mobile Rapport gives you access to thousands of fun and useful apps on Android Market, and most are free to download.”

The full range of Google services and apps is offered as well, including Google Search, Maps, Gmail, YouTube, and Google Talk.

Other highlights of the smartphone include: HSDPA support, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, and Stereo FM Radio.

Official: Sony Buys Out Ericsson's Stake in Sony Ericsson

Speculations about the possible dissolve of the Sony Ericsson joint-venture have come and gone for years, but earlier this month sources close to the matter claimed that the move is imminent and scheduled for the end of the year.

Today, both companies announced they have come to an agreement to make the Sony Ericsson brand a thing of the past.

Ericsson and Sony Corporation has just announced that Sony will acquire Ericsson’s 50% stake in Sony Ericsson, which will wrest full control over the mobile phone business to Sony.

Furthermore, the reasons behind Sony's decision to take full control over the Sony Ericsson brand is the almost lack of interest from its Swedish counterpart, as well as the negative impact that its entire Xperia lineup had on the joint-venture's financial results.

In addition, Sony plans to integrate smartphones with its televisions, PCs, tablets and console gaming operations, in order to save costs and have a better development strategy.

Under agreement, Sony will pay Ericsson 1.05 billion EUR ($1.47 billion) for its 50% stake in Sony Ericsson.

“This acquisition makes sense for Sony and Ericsson, and it will make the difference for consumers, who want to connect with content wherever they are, whenever they want. With a vibrant smartphone business and by gaining access to important strategic IP, notably a broad cross-license agreement, our four-screen strategy is in place,” said Sir Howard Stringer, Sony’s Chairman, Chief Executive Officer and President.

Following the transaction, Sony will also gain a broad intellectual property cross-licensing agreement previously owned by Sony Ericsson, including five essential patent families relating to wireless handset technology.

“We can more rapidly and more widely offer consumers smartphones, laptops, tablets and televisions that seamlessly connect with one another and open up new worlds of online entertainment. This includes Sony’s own acclaimed network services, like the PlayStation Network and Sony Entertainment Network,” concluded Stringer.

According to Sony, the transaction has been approved by both companies and is expected to close in January 2012.

Opera Mini Has Over 130 Million Users

Opera Mini, the most popular mobile browser in the world, has had over 131 million users in September, a recent report from Opera Software shows.

The mobile browser is available for download on a wide range of devices, with support for over 3,000 handset models. It is also available on popular mobile OS flavors out there.

Opera Mini was designed to provide users with speed when browsing the Internet, as well as with important savings.

The mobile application packs compression technology from Opera, through which is compresses web pages by up to 90 percent before sending them to handsets.

Thus, both users and wireless carriers benefit, since browsing the Internet on Opera Mini means less data usage and less string on wireless networks.

The aforementioned report from Nokia focused on Europe this month. According to it, the top ten countries using the browser were United Kingdom, Poland, Germany, Italy, Spain, Romania, Serbia, France, Hungary and Czech Republic.

“For September, Hungary and Romania led the growth race for the greatest number of Opera Mini users, while Hungary and Serbia showed the most page-view growth,” Opera notes.

“For the most data-hungry countries, Hungary and Spain topped the list, meaning they viewed the most data-intensive pages, e.g., sites with lots of pictures.”

Users accessed 11.6 petabytes of uncompressed data on Opera Mini during September, the report shows.

Moreover, the report was focused on analyzing usage differences between the owners of Android, BlackBerry, iPhone, and Windows Phone devices. The report was also taking into consideration usage on feature phones.

Data from the AdMarvel Open Audience Network shows:

- Windows Phone users are more likely to visit email and communications sites compared to users of other platforms.
- Are Android users more educated than users of the other platforms? Maybe, as they are the biggest group in the Education category. Education includes the websites for universities and general education.
- Android users are the least likely to visit social media websites using their browser.

Nokia Lumia 710 Emerges on Nokia USA's Website

Yesterday, mobile phone maker Nokia has unveiled to the world its first handsets running under Microsoft's Windows Phone operating system, and it seems that at least one of these phones might be set to arrive in the United States in the near future, namely Nokia Lumia 710.

The handset
has just been spotted on Nokia USA's website, which clearly suggests that the Finnish giant is considering the US launch of this device. The new mobile phone arrives on shelves with features similar to those packed in the other Windows Phone from Nokia, the Lumia 800, but should feature a much lower price tag.

The new device will arrive on shelves in Black and White, and will offer a range of back cover plates that are interchangeable, for a greater experience.

The Nokia Lumia 710 arrives with a 3.7-inch screen that can deliver an 800 x 480-pixel resolution, along with a 1.4GHz application processor inside, and with a 5-megapixel photo snapper on the back, with LED flash and support for HD video recording.

The new device also comes to the market with 512MB of RAM, 3G up to HSDPA, WiFi and Bluetooth, along with 8GB of user storage memory.

Not to mention that it can deliver a great browsing experience courtesy of Internet Explorer 9, which is compatible with various modern HTML5 web apps.

It also provides users with fast access to Facebook, Twitter and Linked-In, as well as with Nokia Drive for free turn-by-turn navigation, and Nokia Music featuring MixRadio for a great listening experience while on the go.
The smartphone seems like a good option for those who would like to purchase a capable device at an affordable price, and shows that Nokia can deliver the handsets it promised not too long ago.
“Since Nokia's major strategic shift only eight months ago, the company has found a new energy,” Pete Cunningham, principal analyst, Canalys, states.

“It has provided substantial improvements to Symbian, managed to differentiate on Windows Phone and it continues to build on its strong portfolio in mobile phones. Nokia is delivering on its pledges, and is clearly demonstrating its path to future success.”
